With all the amazing things museums in the city of Chicago have to offer, (i.e. weather simulators, a WWII submarine, some of the finest paintings in the world and more) admissions costs can add up quickly. Luckily, February is a great time to visit many of Chicago’s museums, not only because they serve as a great escape from the cold, but because many of them are free to Illinois residents on various days throughout the month.

Adler Planetarium

Free Museum Days: February 2, 5-9, 19-22

The Field Museum

Free Museum Days: February 1-28

Founded in 1893 as the Columbian Museum of Chicago, The Field Museum has spent more than 120 years in the pursuit of scientific knowledge of the world around us. Inside, you’ll take a trip around the world and back in time, exploring the cultures of Ancient Egypt and the Pacific Islands, while also discovering real dinosaur skeletons and the infamous Tsavo Lions. The Museum of Science and Industry

Free Museum Days: February 1, 5–8, 12–15, 20–22, 26–27

The Museum of Science and Industry, located along Chicago’s south lake shore, is one of the largest science museums in the world – home to 400,000 square feet of hands-on exhibits designed to spark scientific discovery and inquiry. Spectacular LEGO marvels of engineering will inspire the builder within you in Brick by Brick, dive below the waves on a real WWII U-505 submarine, and go to Earth’s polar extremes to explore its massive glaciers in Extreme Ice.

The Art Institute of Chicago

Free Museum Days: Every weekday Feb. 1-2, 5-9, 12-15. Every Thursday from 5-8 p.m. throughout the year. Kids 14 and under are always free.

Founded in 1879, The Art Institute of Chicago is one of Chicago’s oldest institutions and is dedicated to preserving and displaying artwork from around the world. From ancient works of Roman, Greek, and Byzantine Art, to contemporary masterpieces, The Art Institute of Chicago has something everyone will enjoy. Not to mention, they have two stellar gift shops perfect for souvenirs for friends and family back home. This hop off tour stop is the perfect way to round out your trip to the Windy City.
